Brenda (Ely's mother in law) and I had been planning this trip to Alaska since November last year. This trip met my expectations. I think I will try again next year. And no, I did not see Sarah Palin. The Carnival Spirit, during the summer, leaves from Seattle on every Tuesday. The stops are: The Tracy Arm Fjord, Skagway, Juneau (the Capital of Alaska), Ketchikan and the last port before heading back to Seattle (the following Tuesday) is Victoria, BC, Canada.

Ana had lots of family girls (Jenny was not able to come) at her home to celebrate Ava's Baby Shower. We ate good food: pabellon venezolano - shreaded beef, platanos, white rice and black beans (one of Ana's favorite foods). With a nice ice-cream cake. We also played some games and the winners were: Tiffany, grandma Millie, Linda, and Mila.

A Paradise in the Venezuelan Caribbean

Would this be the samllest island inthe world? I found this picture when I was searching for more information on Los Roques. This group of islands are located at about 85 miles north of Caracas very close to "La Orchila".
There was a time when I really wanted to go there. I could even include this place in my "Bucket List".

The reason I started looking for more information on Los Roques this morning was that I saw some of the pictures that my nephew Pedro Rodriguez posted on his FB.
Take a look, the sand is white and the water transparent.

Piece of Texas History

I received these beautiful pecan nuts from Dane Hine. He told me that the property where these pecan nuts came from was originally owned by George McKinstry who was often visited by his good friend Steven F. Austin. SFA is considered the Father of Texas. He came to Texas in 1825 with 300 families (The term The Old Three Hundred is used to described them) and settled what is today Brazoria County.
Steven F. Austin died of pneumonia, in this property on West Columbia on December 27, 1836.

Ana, Mike and Aurora are celebrating Halloween at their coldesac. They were working hard when I came home (I was with the Scotts, Mila and Carla celebrating Ted's birthday) on finishing their Jack-O-Lanterns. Aurora is pretty excited. She knows that the whole family is wearing "cow" costumes, even the dogs, tomorrow to go Trick or Treating.

Nurtured Family Open House

Since Jenny was not going to be in town for the Open House of Nurtured Family Boutique, she asked me if I could go to the classes they were teaching about diapering and baby wearing. I asked Ana to go with me and she was amazed of the things that are available through stores like this one. Any way we attended both classes on Jenny's behalf and we came home with three cloth diapers for Aurora. It was fun and there were lots of families. Ana, even talked to one of the ladies who works there and she end up being the buyer. So Ana offered Mila's Vintage Baby Bows and she was interested.
The owners Mark and Rebecca are pregnant with their fifth child.

In May of 1980 this group was celebrating with me my college graduation.

In January of 1981 my mom and dad came to Salem to visit us to spend sometime with the cute baby Jenny. She was three months old.

In October of 1982 we were living in Maracaibo. Jenny celebrated her second birthday there.

Tio Felix, Mila, Lina and Carla in this picture. Tio Felix came to Houston to visit and to say good bye. He died few months after this visit in Valencia, Venezuela. The year was 2004.

When I finished Grade School in 1967. My mom and I went to the Expo 67 in Montreal, Canada. It was a great experience for me. We arrived in New York and took a bus from New York to Montreal. As I recall we spent a few days in New York. I remember walking on 5th Avenue, and I remember visiting some museums and also the United Nations.

My mom took the picture I show here in front of the Lincoln Center of the Performing Arts. I was sitting by the water fountain that was dedicated to Mr. Charles Revson The founder of Revlon.

The Olmec flourished between about 1500 and 600 bc. San Lorenzo, their oldest known center, was destroyed around 900 bc. It was replaced by La Venta, a city built in an axial pattern that influenced urban development in Central America for centuries. A mounded earthen pyramid about 30 m (100 ft) high, among the earliest in Mesoamerica, was the center of a complex of temples and plazas.

The Olmec were the first to use stone architecturally and sculpturally, even though it had to be quarried in the Tuxtla Mountains of Veracruz. Their colossal basalt stone heads of males, about 2.7 m (9 ft) high and weigh as much as twenty tons, can be seen today at the open-air La Venta Park-Museum (Cost of one day pass $50 Mex. Pesos) in Villahermosa and at the Museum of Anthropology in Jalapa (Xalapa). Their writing, a numerical system, was the precursor of Mesoamerican writing. While I was in Villahermosa Mexico I heard from Ana the sad news of Mike's dad (Tony Masden) passing. He had been battling with his illness for few months now. I pray for Mike and Ana, that God will give them the strength and comfort them in their grieving. I also pray for Silvia and Tony's mom Millie during these difficult times. Tony and Matt will be together watching over the family from heaven.

Hace 23 años Ely consiguió este billete cuando vivía en la parte sur de Miami. El billete había sido impreso en el año 1928. Cuando él vió el año de impresión enseguida pensó en su abuela Lina e inmediatamente se lo regaló. Desde entonces la abuela carga este billete en su cartera y no se ha separado de ese billete. La abuela Lina nació el 28 de Diciembre de 1928.

Yo tengo recuerdos de visitas al club y de bañarme en la piscina frente al Lago de Maracaibo. Recuerdo que hacía frío por las tardecitas por la brisa que soplaba. Tambien recuerdo haber ido a un "baile" con orquesta como también a ver películas en la sala de cine con pantalla al aire libre. Que buenos recuerdos. Mila invited the family to a tipical venezuelan-american sunday brunch: arepas, blackbeans, "carne mechada", "cachapas", "nata", "queso fresco rayado", avocado, bacon, scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, etc.

Following I mentioned the people present at the brunch: Hosts - Mila, Saul and Carla, Guests: Claudia and Kyle came from College Station, Ely, DeAnna, Ely II and Madeleine came from Channelview, Christi y Ruli came from Houston - Memorial, and from Tomball: Ana, Mike & Aurora, Grandma Lina and me (Mary).

We had a great time and ate deliciously. Ted and Jennifer were not able to come. They were camping at Huntsville this weekend and they took Quincy with them.

Claudia and Kyle were going to stop at the Texas Renaissance Festival http://www.texrenfest.com/home.html in Magnolia on their way back to College Station.

Mila, Carla, Aurorita y yo fuimos a recibir a la abuelita Lina al aeropuerto. Viene a pasar tres semanas con nosotros. Después de recibirla y en camino a casa de Jenny y Ted nos paramos a tomar un snak en "Chick Fil A". En frente a Chick Fil A Mila y yo tomamos las fotos que aquí anexo. We celebrated Jenny's 28th Birthday with a lunch at Goode Company Seafood. We all liked the mexican style "ceviche" called Campechana. We were trying to figure out the ingredients and we all agreed on: crabmeat, shrimp, avocado, tomato, cilantro, onion, olive oil, lemon/lime... It is soooo good! I should have taken a picture of it... Happy Birthday Jenny.

Ana ha estado padeciendo de dolores en la zona del hígado por lo menos 6 años! Realmente ningún médico había dado con el diagnóstico correcto hasta que hace aproximadamente dos meses Mike y ella estaban pasando un fin de semana en Austin y de repente el dolor se agudizó y Mike la llevó a la Sala de Emergencias. En ese momento, a través de un ecosonograma, se vieron claritas las piedritas en la vesícula.
En cuanto regresaron, yo llamé al cirujano que operó a Milagros no hace mucho, Dr. Jorge Leiva, un joven doctor que por su acento parece Mexicano. En el hospital lo llaman Antonio Banderas!
Entre Ana y él programaron la operación para el lunes pasado Sept. 29.
Segun el Dr. Leiva, la operación fue exitosa, y por medio de una cortadita cerca del ombligo, logro extirpar la vesícula.
La intervención es ambulatoria, pero Ana estaba con tanto dolor que el Dr. Leiva recomendó dejarla en el hospital para observarla mientras le administraban medicina para mitigar el dolor.
Esta es la segunda noche y todavía está hospitalizada. Aparte del dolor, también está mostrando la tensión muy baja 81/44.
Dios quiera que ya mañana puedan darle de alta y pase el resto de la semana en su casa. Se estima que debe regresar al trabajo el próximo lunes.

Ike's Path near Houston

Ike's path is shown to the east of Houston. It went right through Jenny's work (Exxon Mobil Baytown Petrochemical Plant). Ely and DeAnna were not at home when the storm went by their house. Jenny and Ted were very adventurous and brave and stayed home - I called them when there was still enough time for them to come to Tomball. Well, the eye was about 50 miles in diameter and they experienced the calmness of the eye for about two hours. By the time the worst winds hit Tomball/Spring area Ike was a CAT 1. I think we probably felt around 50 to 70 mph winds for about two hours. Six days after the storm, half of the population of the Houston Metro Area is still without power. It would take about two to three months to clean up Galveston.

We fled to Austin after Ike

We were forced out of our houses because we were out of electricity and water. Ely, DeAnna and the kids came to Austin and spent a couple of nights at the Holliday Inn on Business Park Drive in Austin where we were staying.

We found out that if you were a victim of Ike the hotels do not charge taxes. One blessing we were happy to hear.

The pictures you see here were taken at a marina on lake Travis. We were able to get to know Austin thanks to Ike.

Mr. Ike wants to visit Houston!

Today, Thursday 09/11 everyone in the family was let go home at noon so we could prepare for the storm.

Mila, Saul and Carla are staying at their house.

Jennifer and Ted are also staying at their house (Too close to Lake Houston)

Ana, Mike and Aurora are staying at their house.

Ely, DeAnna and all the kids, plus her sister and her babies are leaving for Bastrop to stay with Benjamin and Melissa.

I am staying at home.

I pray that our lives and homes are spare and we could go back to rebuilding as soon as possible.

God bless you and if we can't be contacted most likely is because the power and phone lines are down.

I went to get propane for the BBQ grill and it took me about one hour on that line that you see on the picture above. (One bottle is refill for $15.00 - 40# on the scale)

DeAnna's 28th Birthday

Edouard arrived in Tomball

I just talked to Mila and they are prepared. I also called Jenny and they are prepared. Ely did not answered the call. Ana, Mike & Aurora are in their home near me and Carla preferred to stay with them than spending the night with Milo. Claudia has an exam this afternoon in College Station and she says she is going to stay there to take the test.

According to the news we are going to have rain all day today and tomorrow.

Nuestra querida Nohemi regresó a casa a reunirse con su pequeño hijo en el paraíso. Aquí comparto dos fotos donde está Nohemi. La primera fué tomada frente a la casa de la calle Vargas de Ciudad Ojeda por allá en 1964. La segunda la tomé en Junio 2006 junto con Felix y Sra. en Maracaibo donde vivió al lado de su siempre adorado ahijado Felix.

Suzanne Oakley is Dancing in Heaven

My good friend Suzanne Oakley is dancing in heaven today. She taught me how to dance country music. She was a good friend. She moved to Huntsville because her whole department was moved there. She loved and enjoy the SA dances. And I enjoyed going to the dances because of her. She made a little book for me called "Life Studies" and I keep it with me. The three chapters of the book are titled: The Purpose of Life, The Lord's Plan and After Graduation.

She was an angel and a very special friend. I'll always remember her. I am so greatful for her friendship.

Getting to Know Quincy

As Ted mentioned in his blog, Mila, Carla, Aurora, Mike, Ana and me went to visit Jenny and Ted to meet Quincy. Quincy's fur is very soft. And when he is hot he falls flat on his stomack over the cool tile and he quickly cools off. Aurora kept calling him Milo. For Aurora all dogs are called Milo. I'm sure Carla has tought her that. Milo is Carla's dog.

We had a great time and enjoy some of Jenny's cooking!

Together at Houston Home

Ted and Jenny are together again in their new beautiful house after being appart for two weeks! Jenny arrived last Thursday evening and went directly to the house. Earlier that day Ted closed on the house. The moving truck arrived today at around 10:30 am. I went to visit them and had the first dinner with them: linguini with meat sauce, corn and texas chease toast.
Congratulations to Ted and Jenny. You have a beautiful house, that now you can call home. God bless you and keep you safe at home.

Summerwood & Deussen Park

Mike, Ana, Ted and I went to Summerwood yesterday. It was the first time for all of them to see the house that Jenny picked out a few days ago. They all like it very much. Off course the most important was that Ted liked it. It is not only the house that people fall in love with. It is also the area where it is. Summerwood is a master plan located on the west bank of Lake Houston. We drove a little bit around the area and saw some of Ted and Jenny's new neighbors: very gracious deer above (I even took a video). We also drove to Alexander Deussen Park which is about two miles from the house. This park has a dock and landing for boats and jet-skis, lots of areas for picnics and bbq and lots of trees. I think Ted is already thinking about running the trails and thoroughly explore the area. God bless them with health and a beautiful family to raise.

In Memory of Sweet Uncle Matt

Mike's little brother Matt was very kind, gentle and sweet to Aurora. Tragically he passed very early yesterday morning. He is going to be missed so. He was 23 years old. We know that our father in heaven will keep him safe. We pray for strength, peace and consolation to all the family.

I found these words that may help us all through this time of mourning:

"Trust in God to be God. God is the Great Creator. God didn't create this wonderfully beautiful, infinite universe to walk away from it. God had a plan from the beginning which included the need for Jesus and your need for a savior at a time like this.
The familiar names of the Bible tell of everyone's need for a savior. Let's look at just one way we need a savior: to comfort us in times of almost unconsolable loss.

Job spoke that faith is a consolation "Then I would still have this consolation-- my joy in unrelenting pain-- that I had not denied the words of the Holy One."

David writes, "My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life." "May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant."

Isaiah says, "For the LORD comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted ones."
In Jeremiah, God speaks to his people, "I will turn their mourning into gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow."

Paul often writes, "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort?"

But God knew that even the kindest words are not consolation enough when we are pressed by death, and so he sent his Son to save us, and still he sends his Spirit to bring us to him.

Madeleine Pearl Sánchez

Madeleine Pearl es mi nieta número cuatro *4*. Nació en el Centro Médico de Houston. El 25 de Marzo de 2008. Ella es la hija número cuatro *4* de DeAnna y la número tres *3* de Ely.
Los ojos de Madeleine son azules oscuros pero no pareciera que estan definidos todavía.
Le pido a Dios que la bendiga con salud y la proteja como tambien a sus padres y hermanos.

El carro nuevo de Ana y Mike

Este es el carro nuevo que Ana tanto había querido. Es un Honda Accord de último modelo con asientos de cuero e inclusive con el sistema navegador. Sin embargo fueron sabios en escojerlo de cuatro cilindros para ahorrar combustible. Algo asi como 30 millas por galon.

Ya yo lo manejé y usamos el navegador (con voz femenina). Yo estoy pensando en que mi proximo carro sea como este, quizás en blanco.

Aurora Michelle Masden is 17 Months Old

Aurora is 17 months old. Here are some pictures I took at Mila's house. Aurora was wearing a brand new outfit her mom bought for her at Palais Royale.

Aurora is starting to talk. And I am happy to say that she is learing words in English and in Spanish. But I also could say that her favorite word is "mama". She waves good bye, but she prefers to wave good bye when she is the one leaving.

Ely, DeAnna & the Kids Weekend Visit

Ely, DeAnna and the kids came by to visit. They brought three of their four kids (Haylee is still traveling ) and they also brought Lucy.

Ely II and Aurora got in the little pool for a while.

We had fajita meat on the grill for lunch additionally corn on the cob, avocadoes, smoke chorizo & tortillas.

The kids had a good time. They left around 7:00 pm Sunday evening.

Dallas, Texas

Ayer fué un día muy interesante. Muy temprano en la mañana salí de la casa al aeropuerto Hobby, me tomó aproximadamente una hora en el carro. Allí me conseguí con un grupo de clientes de Colombia que estaban muy interesados en ver un equipo de perforación de los nuestros (IDM Equipment) en plena operación. Por suerte un cliente nuestro nos permitió visitar tres de sus equipos que están perforando en las afueras de Dallas. En la foto abajo pueden ver al NOMAC Land Rig #47.

Despues de visitar los tres taladros, tuvimos oportunidad de manejar hacia el downtown de Dallas. Y en la segunda foto arriba muestro el famoso "Texas School Book Depository" desde donde hace 45 años (22 de Noviembre de 1963) atras Lee Harvey Oswald atentó contra el entonces presidente John F. Kennedy.

Al final del día regresamos a Houston y llegué de regreso a la casa como a las 10:00 p.m.

Baby Ana is 21!

Ana cumplió los 21 años. Y estuvo muy celebrada. Linda, la mamá de Mike, comenzó la celebración. Le preparó de cena el día anterior pollo con dumplings, una de las comidas favoritas de Ana.

El domingo en la mañana Mike le trajo flores frescas y la llevó a desayunar y de compras a su tienda favorita "Forever 21".

En las fotos la ven celebrando al lado de Carla a quien tambien le celebramos su cumpleaños (Carla es Quinceañera!).

Mila preparó el almuerzo, delicioso como de costumbre: Fillet de mignón con salsa de portobello, pure de papas, ensalada verde con salsa de cilantro, y panecillos de papas, y ademas la torta de queso.

Ya la bebé de la familia tiene 21 años.

Dios las bendiga.

My Family Reunion

I am very happy. Today I've had my family (all my descendants) together for the first time in the same place. Amanda came from Miami, where she lives with her mom, to visit her dad for the first time. Her mom and her new family came to spend a week with relatives so Amanda had the opportunity to spend a few days with Ely and DeAnna and their kids. And coincidentally Jenny and Ted came from Boise to Houston for job interviews. If Jenny and Ted move to Houston then we will have this opportunity repeat hopefully soon and more often.

When I walked to the park with Amanda and Snoopy she told me that she liked Houston.

Ana, Mike and Aurora live on the same street where I live. This is a blessing that I count everyday.

God has been very good to me and I can tell by the blessings he pours over my family and me. And I am very thankful for that.

Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico

En este viaje a Monterrey aprendi que Monterrey es conocido por "el Cerro La Silla" y "el Cabrito Asado". Para mi Monterrey es sinonimo de gente amigable, atenta y muy cordial.
Este año el Congreso Mexicano del Petroleo se celebro en Monterrey al cual asisti al acto de inauguracion y al dia siguiente a la Exhibicion de fabricantes, compañias de servicios y otros como: Schlumberger, BJ Services, Caterpillar, Chevron, etc.
Mis amigos de Prosipa fueron excelentes anfitriones empezando por Carlos "Cali" Ortega, Fernando Gomez, Gustavo Dominguez Hijo, Amado Cruz.

La foto del cabrito asandose la tome en la casa de campo de Cali. Aproximadamente una hora al sur del centro de Monterrey en una zona que llaman "El Barrial". Para ir a "El Barrial" tomamos la avenida Eugenio Garza Sada, la cual se convierte en la Carretera Nacional. Cuando ivamos por esta avenida distingui en la distancia al angel Moroni sobre el templo de Monterrey. El templo esta en una zona llamada Valle Alto.

Monterrey tiene mas de 4 millones de habitantes, esta clasificada como la ciudad mas densa de todo Sur America y sin embargo esta catalogada como la ciudad mas segura. Cali dice que "lo mejor que tiene Monterrey es que McAllen esta a dos horas" :-)
